“Is the last mission field the place everyone lives?”
What would
happen if we really knew our neighbors, and they knew us? Let me start
with questions pastors have asked us:
Questions Pastors have asked:
Is
there a member-driven strategy that a church can quickly ramp up for,
that we could start at Easter or soon after, that will enable my members
to connect, really connect, with their neighbors?
We
do neighborhood prayerwalking. But how do we go to the next level,
to get our members beyond just praying for strangers behind closed
doors? And how do we sustain this long term?
Is
there a strategy for reaching neighborhoods that works in tandem with
an advocacy-style community awareness campaign?
I’d have to say that Neighborhood Connections is the most obvious,
for all three. There are many strategies that help members to make
first connections with people, and they have their place in an integrated
plan. But Neighborhood Connections has several advantages for the
more immediate need....(universal—everyone lives in a neighborhood,
Spring is a good time to start, it naturally meshes with the way we
live, taps existing motivations, it's very understandable and therefore
quick and easy to launch). It also demonstrates a withreach heart
in a very real and immediate way. I don’t know of another withreach
strategy on the front end that builds a trust relationship as fast,
and is also so pervasive, establishing real relationships with 75-90%
of the people in your neighborhood within the first year. more
